Branch History - Chapter 6

Scottish Cup Finals

One thing United was really good at was getting to Scottish Cup Finals at Hampden. The usual arrangements were that we would book a hotel close to Hampden for lunch/drinks and all of our buses would meet there before going on to the match. In some cases we also went back to the hotel after the match.

This took a great deal of organisation and a sample of what is involved can be seen in the photo gallery (Cup Finals). Between 1985 and 1994 we reached the final no fewer than 5 times and we had some great days out there even although we suffered a lot of disappointment:

1985 v Celtic we ran 4 buses and were winning 1-0 with 10 minutes to go but lost 2-1
1987 V St Mirren we ran 3 buses and lost 1-0 after extra time and after getting a good goal chalked off when it was 0-0
1988 v Celtic we ran 6 buses including one from Dunfermline. Once again we were leading 1-0 with 10 minutes to go and lost 2-1
1991 V Motherwell we ran 4 buses and lost 4-3 after extra time . Once again we had a good goal chalked off and had another shot which hit the inside of a post, rolled along the goal line and went out for a goal kick. Then when Maurice Malpas blazed the ball over the bar from close range in the last minute of extra time w e all felt that fate was against us and we would never win the cup.

And then finally, in 1994 V Rangers we ran 3 buses and all our disappointments were forgotten as we beat Rangers 1-0 Somehow the United fans felt that this would be the day that the hoodoo ended and the excitement before the game was tremendous. The atmosphere at that game was just fantastic with United fans singing and chanting throughout the entire match. When the final whistle finally was blown the United fans went crazy. The relief among the supporters at finally winning that Scottish Cup was there for all to see and celebrations went well into the night.

Many members of the branch went up to Dundee on the Sunday to join in the celebrations as the cup was paraded through the town culminating in great celebrations outside the Caird Hall. In 2005 it was Celtic again and another odd goal defeat as we ran 2 full buses and had a great day out despite the result.
